A cybersecurity breach occurs when an unauthorized individual or group gains access to a computer system, network, or data. These breaches can result in the theft or destruction of sensitive information, such as personal data, financial information, and confidential business information.
There are several different types of cybersecurity breaches, including:
Phishing: where an individual or group sends fraudulent emails or messages that appear to be from a legitimate source, in order to trick the recipient into providing sensitive information.
Malware: where malicious software is installed on a device, allowing the attacker to gain access to sensitive information and control of the device.
Ransomware: where an attacker encrypts the victim's data and demands a ransom in exchange for the decryption key.
SQL Injection: where an attacker uses malicious SQL code to gain access to a database and steal sensitive information.
Preventing cybersecurity breaches is crucial for individuals, businesses, and organizations. This can include using strong passwords, keeping software updated, and being cautious when opening emails or clicking on links from unknown sources. Additionally, many organizations invest in cybersecurity software, firewalls, and intrusion detection systems to help protect their networks and data.
In case of a breach, it is important to act quickly to contain the damage and prevent further breaches. This can include disconnecting from the internet, resetting passwords, and restoring from backups. It is also important to report the breach to the appropriate authorities and inform any individuals whose data may have been compromised.
In light of the recent security breaches reported globally we strongly advise all our clients to follow the "Secure Account Practices" below.
(Please see a link at the bottom that references a recent disclosure from PayPal detailing a recent breach of their security!)
Secure Account Practices
Use a unique password for each account to prevent cross-account compromise.
Use a long password, ideally at least 12 characters, containing a mix of uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, and special characters.
Avoid using easily guessable information, such as personal information or common words.
Use a password manager to generate and store strong passwords securely.
Enable two-factor authentication (2FA) whenever possible.
Change your passwords regularly and avoid reusing old passwords.
Avoid sharing your passwords with anyone, and do not write them down or store them in an unsecured location.
Avoid using the same password for your email account and social media accounts.
Be wary of phishing scams and suspicious emails or texts asking for your password.
Keep your computer, mobile device, and software up-to-date with the latest security updates.
